25th october is the date when Sahir Ludhianvi left this world in 1980, exactly three decades ago.

On the occasion of his death anniversary, today I am going to discuss some of his creations. His career began in early 1950s. The very first song that he wrote in Hindi movies was in “Do Raaha” (1952) but the movie was released later than “Naujawaan” (1951) and therefore it is “Naujawaan” (1951) that is regarded as the debut movie of Sahir Ludhianvi as a lyricist.

I have so far discussed two songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song. This is a lovely song, which I had never heard before. This song is a “panghat” song, sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. The song is picturised on Nalini Jaiwant and several females shown holding “Gaagri” which is how water was fetched those days in many rural households (according to Bollywood mythology, which I take with a pinch of salt).

Music is composed by S D Burman and the music, clearly based on Bangla folk music, is wonderful to listen to.

Song-Panghat pe dekho aayi milan ki belaa (Naujawaan) (1951) Singer-Rafi, Geeta Dutt,Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

man huaa baawraa nahin manaaye maane re
kunjan mein dekho aayi milan ki belaa

ho o o

jhan jhanan jhanan lahraayi
paayaliyaa mori mori mori
jhan jhanan jhanan lahraayi
paayaliyaa mori mori mori
main piyaa se milne aayi re
chori chori chori chori
man huaa baawraa nahin manaaye maane re

Here is an obscure song from an obscure movie. I am quite sceptical about the details provided in YT with the song. The movie is called “Main Hari”. What does it mean ? Perhaps the title is something more meaningful than that.

According to the YT details, this movie is produced by Minerva and directed by Jageerdar. Starcast include names like Navin Yagnik, Naseem, Maya Devi, Hari Shivdasani, Ghulam Hussain etc.

This song is sung by Khan Mastana and music is composed by Meer Sahab. There is no mention of the lyricist of this song. Later, I came to know from another source that Kamal Amrohi is the lyricist.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs, including the lyricist (s).

Here is this nice panghat song from this obscure movie from 1940.

PS-Now Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our inhouse expert, has solved the riddle for us. The title of the movie was “Main Haari” (My Defeat), which now makes perfect sense.

Song-Panghat pe ek chhabeeli (Main Hari)(1940) Singer-Khan Mastana, Lyrics-Kamal Amrohi, MD-Meer Sahab

I just came to know (thanks to information given by Khyati Bhatt) that today (9 september) is the birth anniversary of Leela Chitnis (9 september 1909 -14 july 2003). Leela Chitnis was born on 9 september 1909, and that makes her date of birth a perfect 09-09-09 whether you write it in the British style or the US style.

Leela Chitnis, known to many as an actress playing the role of mother in 1950s onwards was one of the earlier pioneers of Hindi movies. During the earlier years of Hindi movies, acting in Hindi movies was considered a disreputable job for women and so it would be difficult to get for women from respectable families to act in movies. Leela Chitnis was one of the earliest well educated women from respectable family background to enter into movies. This paved the way for future generation of women to enter into this profession.

She in fact became the first Indian actress to model for Lux soap, which was then regarded as a big recognition for any movie star. Till then, Lux had only used Western acresses to model for Lux soap.

On the occasion of Leela Chitnis’ bith anniversary, here is a song from “Kangan” (1939). This movie was a Bombay Talkies movie. It was produced by Himanshu Roy and directed by Franz Osten and it had Ashok Kumar, Leela Chitnis, Mubarak, Amiya, V H Desai, P F Pithawala, Saroj Borkar etc.

The song is sung by Leela Chitnis and it is picturised on her as well.

This movie had two sets of lyricist and music directors, viz Pradeep-Saraswati Devi and Pt Narottam Vyas-Ramchandra Pal. This song is written by Pt Narottam Vyas and composed by Ramchandra Pal.

“Shehnaayi” (1947) was a Filmistan Production movie. It was directed by P L Santoshi. The movie had Nasir Khan, Rehana, Indumati, Mumtaz Ali, Dulari, V H Desai, Leela Mishra, Kumkum etc in it.

The movie was full of new and innovative kinds of songs. A few of them are very well known, viz Aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday and Maar kataari mar jaana .

But even the “lesser known” songs from this movie are superb songs in their own rights.

Here is a song from “Shehnaayi” (1947) that I heard (and watched) for the first time only just now. What a delightful and original song it must have been at that time.

This song is sung by Binapani Mukherji, Meena Kapoor and chorus. It is picturised as a panghat song on four ladies. I can identify the lady lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice as Rehana. I am unable to identify the other lady doing the bulk of lip syncing. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her as well as the other two.
Vidur Sury, a regular of the site mentions that the song has the voice of Mohantara Talpade as well.

P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

There is one word towards the end of the song where I have got stuck and put ? there . I request our knowledgeable readers with keener ears to tell us what word it could be.

“Ishaara” (1943) is a movie produced ages ago and little information is known about this movie today. But we have our own inhouse Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh to help us out. In addition, we also had late Khwaja Sultan Ahmad (brother of music director Khursheed Anwar) as our visitor in the past who shared some unknown facts about those days. Here are the details of this movie as narrated to us by the two abovementioned knowledgeable expers:

“Ishaara” (1943) was produced by D R D Wadia. The story of the film was based on the English novel of Dewan Sharar titled “Gong of Shiva “. It was about allowing a Hindu widow to remarry, a controversial subject at that time. The movie was directed by J.K.Nanda and Music was by Khwaja Khursheed Anwar.

The film had a cast of Prithviraj Kapoor, Suraiya, Satish Batra, Swarnalata, K.N.Singh, Jagdish Sethi, Pratima, Vatsala etc.
The story was of 2 brothers, elder being the kind and guiding spirit to the younger bad and wayward brother who does not pay heed to the several Isharas of the elder one.

Ishara was the first hindi film of Khwaja Khursheed Anwar.

Khwaja Khurshid Anwar was a very respected and talented music director of his times. Roshan and Shankar were his chelas. Naushad had great opinion of him. Khwaja Khurshid Anwar was a Gold medal winner of Philosophy in his M.A.exam.

He migrated to Pakistan in 1952 and gave a new life to its film industry. He was awarded highest honour in Pakistan for his musical services. Even India awarded him the MMIM(mortal men-immortal melodies)award in 1983.
He died on 30-10-1984 at Lahore.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This song is sung by Suraiyya and it is easily one of the earliest songs sung by Suraiyya in her career. Seeing that she acted in this movie, it is almost certain that this song was picturised on herself. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

I have not been able to find about the lyricist of this song

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Many day to day activities, that many of us take for granted used to be (still is) very important household chores. One such activity is/ was bringing water. These days, many homes have water taps where they get water supplied from their municipal corporation and the householders need not go out of their homes to fetch water. But we still have a sizeable population who have to go out to bring water (either at community water taps, or at private or community wells/ tubewells, or at rivers/ ponds. This activity is mainly the preserve of womenfolk. and while these ladies are at it, they obviously exchange the latest gossips among themselves.

Hindi movies, especially of the golden era exploited this opprtunity to the hilt. The leading lady would be shown going out to the local well/ river with her sahelis. The sahelis would tease the leading lady about the love in her life. Sometimes, even this love would be at hand to tease the leading lady.

Here is a delightful “panghat” song from “Pyaar Ki Jeet” (1948). This song is sung by Suraiyya, Surinder Kaur and Meena Kapoor. In this song, it is the ladies who seem to tease their lovers for a change.

Only the audio of this song is available. Seeing that this movie( a Famous Pictures production, directed by O P Datta) had Rehman, Suraiya, Gope, Gyani, Raj Mehra, Manorama, Leela Misra, Yashodhara Katju, Niranjan Sharma etc in it, my guess is that this song could have been picturised on Suraiyya, Manorama (lip syncing in Surinder Kaur’s voice) and Yashodhara Katju (lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice). I am not sure about the actress lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice, though. Incidentally, this movie had another song sung by the same threee singers.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

“Panghat” (1943) is a Prakash pictures movie which was produced by Vijay Bhatt and directed by K J Parmar and Mahesh Chandra. There was not much known about this movie, but thanks to Mr Arunkumar’s comments about this movie in another song of “Panghat”, we now have a good idea about the story of this movie as well as about the actors.

Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh had to say about this movie:

The story is very interesting and will remind the readers of a popular and famous film of 1976 with melodious music.

Jamunaprasad Chaturvedi(Jeevan-who was Onkarnath Dhar in real life, but known as O K Dhar Kashmiri in the 30s) son of Durgaprasad Chaturvedi, is an orthodox Bramhin Zamindar who has built a community Well to fill water for everybody in the surrounding villages. His wife Mrs Shantidevi(Leela) and he are popular. When his daughter Radha grows up, he fixes her marriage with Mohan(Umakant Desai) son of Trivedi, a big businessman from other village.

Kiran, son of Ganga Prasad arrives instead of Mohan and is welcomed by them, mistaking him for Mohan. Kiran is loved by Jamuna prasad ,his wife and also Radha. After some time when the real identity of Kiran is revealed Jamuna and his wife begin to cold shoulder him and he is suggested in various ways to leave. Then Mohan arrives and realises the mistake but finally sacrifices for the sake of the lovers and the end is good.

By now, it must be clear that the story is same as that of CHITCHOR(1976) where Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab had starred.
Rajkumari has done the role of Jyoti, Heroine’s friend and the Heroine Radha is played by Alaknanda. Kiran kumar is played by Sushil Kumar.

Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the fourth song from the movie.

All sources mention this song as a solo song sung by Rajkumari. But listening to the song as well as watching the picturisation, it becomes clear that Rajkumari has sung just a few lines in the song. The song has the voices of another three female singers who in fact sing more lines than Rajkumari. Most of the singing is done by the chorus.

I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actresses in the picturisation as well as the unidentified voices in the song. On my part I can only identify Alaknanda. another interesting thing to note is that the Rajkumari Shukla who acts in this movie (as saheli of Alaknanda) is different from the singer Rajkumari who has sung this song.

Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

There are a few places in the lyrics that need correction. I request our readers with keener ears to help suggest the right words there.

I came to know just now that today (18 february 2016) is the birth anniversary of Nimmi (DoB 18 february 1933). I was not sure that I would be able to find a Nimmi song that was not yet posted. Prima facie, most Nimmi songs were composed by Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, S D Burman, Ghulam Mohammad, Madan Mohan etc and most movies of these music directors are already YIPPEED in the blog.

I tend to associate Nimmi with movies that had music by Naushad. Deedaar(1951), Aan (1952), Amar (1954), Udan Khatola (1955) are movies that come to mind. All the songs of these movies have already been covered in the blog. The oldest Naushad movie with Nimmi in it which is not yet YIPPEED in “Sohni Mahiwal”(1958). Three songs from this movie are yet to be discussed. These songs are fortunately picturised on Nimmi.

Here is a song from “Sohni Mahiwal”(1958) on the occasion. The song is sung by Lata and chorus. It is picturised on Nimmi (playing Sohni) and others (playing her sahelis). Bharat Bhushan (playing Mahiwal) is also visible in the picturisation.

Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 29
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Haan ji, bahut dinon baad. . . after a gap of many days. I am reviving and adding one more gem of a song to the series on ’Songs To Tickle Your Memory’. And once again, it is the doing of Arvinder ji. Today morning I get a call from him he informs me that he has truckload full of items he deals in, to be delivered to me. Samajh to yahi aaya that he is trying to wring one more song from me. But yes, the story is same as before. His request has been sitting in my mailbox now for some weeks. And it continues to accumulate interest in terms of more email reminders.:)

This song is from the 1962 film ‘Apna Bana Ke Dekho’. There are seven songs in this film, and three of them are already showcased here, including the most famous song of this film – “Raaz e Dil Un Se Chhupaaya Na Gaya”. This post makes it four songs posted now. In the remaining songs, there is yet one more gem of Asha solo, waiting to come on board.

Ah yes, this song is sung by Asha ji too.  Music is by Ravi and the lyrics are written by SH Bihari. It is a fast paced dance song, with an accompaniment of a chorus of ladies, presumably the’sahelis’ (friends) of, as the main singer tells us about her fears of going to ‘panghat’ (the village well) to fetch water. She is apprehensive of the young men on the way, who watch her with meaningful looks. A very interesting set of lyrics.

Listen and enjoy.

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog. This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. Mohe panghat pe nandlaal chhed gayo re was one of the 12 listed songs from ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960) which became very popular. Shakeel Badayuni was credited for this song though the song was inspired from a traditional dance (kathak) thumri written, probably sometime in the 19th century.

After the film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960) was released, Raghunath Brahmbhatt (1892-1983) who is known as ‘Raskavi’ in Gujarat, lodged a complained with Film Writers’ Association against K Asif for wrongly giving credit to Shakeel Badayuni for the song. He claimed that he had written the lyrics as far back as in 1920 for a Gujarati play ‘Chhatra Vijay’. It was reported that K Asif paid royalty to Raghunath Brahmbhatt at that time with an assurance that suitable acknowledgement would be given in the credit title.

When the film was once again released in its colour version in 2004, it was noticed that no credit for the song was given to Raghunath Brahmbhatt. His grandson, Dr. Raj Brahmbhatt initiated a legal proceeding against the producer of the colour version of the film, M/s Shapoorji Pallonji’s Sterling Investment Corporation. After that, an agreement was reached under which the producer would give credit to Raskavi Raghunath Brahmbhatt for the song on the VCD/DVD cover of the film. [Source: DNA India, November 18, 2005]. However, in all published material and also on discs, even now, the credit is still being given to Shakeel Badayuni for the song.

In Projesh Bannerji’s book ‘Dance on Thumri’, it was mentioned that there were hundreds of thumris written especially for kathak dances by kathak dancers like Bindadin Maharaj and others and I find that ‘mohe panghat per nandalal chhhed gayo re’ is listed as one of the dance thumris. It was, therefore, no surprise that in the film, the song was choreographed by Kathak exponent Lachchu Maharaj as a kathak dance which was performed by Madhubala on the screen. So, in my view, even Raghunath Brahmbhatt may have been inspired by this traditional thumri while writing the lyrics for this song used in the Gujarati play ‘Chhatra Vijay (1920).

The earliest singer who had rendered and recorded this thumri in raag Pilu appears to be Indubala, the record of which was released in September 1930 (78 rpm record No. P.10237). Later, Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan of Agra-Atrauli gharana also rendered the thumri ‘Panghatwa pe Nandlaal chhed layi re’ with somewhat different wordings.

Today, I am presenting the Indubala version of the traditional thumri ‘mohe panghat par Nandlaal chhed liyo re’ (1930) which, in my view, is the inspiration for Naushad to compose the song with the same mukhda. A traditional thumri generally have mukhda with only one antara. Words are simple and colloquial but they are musically interpreted. Just note how Indubala gives emphasis on the words ‘naajuk kalaiyya’ and the way she pronounce ‘maror’ to give the listeners the feel of a twisted wrist.

“Raam Navami”(1956) was produced by Jasubhai Patel and directed by Raman B Desai for Subhag Productions, Bombay. The partially color Mythological movie had Nirupa Roy, Prem Adib, Tiwari, Yashoshara Katju, Babau Raje, Shobha Khote, Rajkumar, Raj Adib, Bheem, Ratnamala, Nandu Khote, Pandey, Sheela, Amrit Rana, Radheshyam, Hublikar, Singh, Samson, Mahesh Kumar, Baijnath, Jawahar Kaul, Rooplaxmi, Shree Bhagwan, Dubey, Poonam Kapoor etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. All eight songs had the voice of Asha Bhonsle in it.

Two songs from the movie have been covered in the past. Here is the third song from “Raam Navami”(1956) to appear in the blog.
Asha Bhonsle is the female singer alongwith chorus. All sites, including HFGK mentions that this song has the voices of Rafi and Balbir as well. The audio quality is poor and I am unable to detect more than one lead voice in the song.

The song is penned by Kavi Pradeep. Music is composed by Bulo C Rani.

I have failed to get many words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help identify the male voices and they are also requested to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics as applicable.

for the time being, I have assumed that the voices of Rafi and Balbir are there in the song, though I am personally not sure of it on the basis of the audio of the song.

This is the 900th song of Anand Bakshi as a lyricist in the blog.

Blog Day : 3476 Post No. : 13965

When one looks at it, R D Burman, Rajesh Khanna, and Kishore Kumar rose to the top, taking the film world by storm almost simultaneously. In many of these movies, the three in fact worked together as well.

But their careers diverged as far as staying at the top was concerned. While Kishore Kumar remained at the top throughout his life, Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom deserted him by the mid 1970s. R D Burman continued to rule throughout 1970s, before he found himself upstaged, not by better music, but by music of the nature that testified to the fact that the saying “if you cannot dazzle them by brilliance, baffle them by bulshitting” applied to HFM after 1980s. R D Burman could not cope with that kind of music that began the vogue after 11980s and he slowly began to lose ground and assignmet, before finding a late second wind with “1942 a Love Story”(1994) which came a bit too late for him as he has already expired by the time music of this movie began to make waves.

One can notice that while Rajesh Khanna saw a meteoric rise and then fall, R D Burman maintained his brilliance for much longer. If fact, the music that R D Burman created in the second half of 1970s was arguably better that those composed in the first half of 1970s. While majority of R D Burman compositions in first half are inspired by Western music, the second half finds him using more and more Indian kind of music.

“Mehbooba”(1976) is a case in point. The songs of this movie present some very fine examples of semi classical songs. This movie finds R D Burman composing songs based on Raag Bihag, Raag Darbari Kaanda as well as Raag Shivranjani. One of these songs, viz

“Mehbooba”(1976) was produced by Musheer-Riaz andit was directed by Shakti Samanta. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Yogita Bali, Manmohan Krishan, Nazir Hussain, Sujit Kumar, Asrani, Asha Sachdev, Prem Chopra, Meena.T., Harindranath Chattopadhyaya, Chandrashekhar, Leela Mishra, Madan Puri, Master Alankar, Birbal, UmaDutt, Raj Rani, Abhimanyu Sharma, Ram Murti Chaturvedi etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. seven of these songs have been covered in the blog in the past. Here are the details of these seven songs posted in the blog:

Parbat ke peeche chambe da gaaon 410 19-Dec-08
Gori tori paijaniya 411 20-Dec-08
Mere naina saawan bhaadon phir bhi mera man pyaasa Multiple version song 480 1-Jan-09
Main tawaayaf hoon mujra karoongi 10692 13-Jan-15
Haseenon mere paas aao 11710 30-Dec-15
Jamuna kinaare aaja chhaliya pukaare aaja 13948 20-Jan-18

That leaves us with the eighth and final song from “Mehbooba”(1976). This song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is of course composed by R D Burman. It is an extremely sweet and melodious folk music based song which is picturised as a “panghat” song on Hema Malini and sahelis, while Rajesh Khanna looks on from a distance. He acts and grabs Hema Malini’s kalaai only after the song gets over. Good to see him not interrupting the song midway. Our heroes and also villians certainly have taste for HFM music. 🙂

With this song, “Mehbooba”(1976) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

And unnoticeably, Anand Bakshi touches 900 songs as a lyricist in the blog with this spng.

“Jigar”(1949) was directed by Bhagwan for Chandni Chitra Production. The movie had Bhagwan, Leela Gupte, Vasantrao, Baburao etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Four songs from the movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Jigar”(1949) to appear in the blog. This romantic expression of love “panghat” song is sung by Rajkumari, C Ramchandra and chorus. Ehsan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song. My guess is that this song is picturised on Bhagwan and Leela Gupte. My guess could be wrong, seeing that I had made the same guess of actors for a C Ramchandra- Lata duet from this movie in the past as well. 🙂

Song-Mohe panghat pe jaate darr laage (Jigar)(1949) Singers-Rajkumari, C Ramchandra, Lyrics-Ehsan Rizvi, MD-C Ramchandra

Ah yes – ‘Hunterwaali’. Seems that just like Tarzan, ‘Hunterwaali’ has been quite a favorite title and theme for film producers in India. The original ‘Hunterwaali’ was released in 1935 – with Fearless Nadia assaying the title role. This was followed in 1943 with a title variation of ‘Hunterwaali Ki Beti’. Then in 1959 came another ‘Hunterwaali’, this time the title role being played by Mehru. In 1972, came a production from the south. The female lead role was played by Jyotilakshmi. In 1978, yes, one more ‘Hunterwaali’ film was released. And guess, the lady playing the title role – it is Bindu.
[Ed Note: Atul ji points out that there is another ‘Hunterwaali’ film right there from the year 1959; the title is ‘Miss Hunterwaali’.]

After 1978, for lack of recorded data, it cannot be certainly said what other ‘Hunterwaali’ films came. There is a Bhojpuri film by this name in 2014-15. YouTube also informs us that there was a film by this title, produced in Pakistan also, in 1988.

As per the details recorded in HFGK, the film is produced by Madhav Rao and Rustom Irani under the banner of Golden Movies Corporation, Bombay and is directed by BJ Patel. The cast of actors is listed as Mehru, Samar Roy, Habeeb, Ram Raseela, Mirajkar, Jeet Bala, Kailash, Shri Bhagwan, Sattar, and Mohammad amongst others. Five songs are listed for this film. All the songs are written by Shaad. As I checked for this lyricists name in the Geet Kosh, I find that his name appears in just one more film viz., ‘Rifle Girl’ in 1958, which is also already represented here on our blog. Interestingly, the music director for ‘Rifle Girl’ (1958) and ‘Hunterwaali’ (1959) is the same – Harbans. In the Geet Kosh, we see his name appear in eight films over a period of 1958 to 1966.

Coming to the song itself. This wonderful melodious song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. The beginning of the song is so stirring. The chorus sound of “Lallal Laara, Lallaara” immediately speaks of a promise of a wonderful song to follow. And the promise is verily kept by the music director. One may listen to this tune and may comment that this tune is familiar, and that it is adapted from such and such and such other songs. But that analysis is not important. The lilt and the joy in this melody speaks for itself. Yet once again, the observations pan out – an obscure film (1960s and earlier), unknown or really very less known artists, nothing much available as information – all these characteristics combine to ensure some very lovely and mostly unheard, unfamiliar songs. This instance is no less.

So with this lilting song, the 1958 version of ‘Hunterwaali’ makes its debut on our blog today.

Song – Ye Behta Behta Paani, Ye Rut Ye Jawaani  (Hunterwaali) (1959) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Shaad, MD – Harbans
Chorus

Lyrics

lallal laara

o chori chori aa ja
ho chori chori aa ja re
o chori chori aa ja
kahaan pe laage nainwa

oo oo oo oo oo
aaj sakhi re mora mann lehraaye
sar se chunariya udti jaaye
kaahe sakhi ri mora mann lehraaye
sar se chunariya udti jaaye
oo oo oo oo

Hullo Atuldom

“Darmiyaan” (1997) was a movie set in the Bombay (before being rechristened Mumbai) of 1946. It starred Kiron Kher, Tabu, (established actors of that time) with Rita Ganguly (renowned Hindustani vocalist), Rupal Patel, Hilla Sethna, Sayaji Shinde, Shahbaz Khan playing supporting roles. Arif Zakaria made his debut in this movie in the difficult character of a eunuch.

Kiron Kher plays a dancer or tawaif who is also a beautiful starlet who becomes very successful in the movies. She is initially in denial that she has sired a eunuch. She attains fame, has an affair with one of her co actors who later ditches her for a younger actress etc. She is disappointed / disillusioned and becomes addicted to all vices possible to the point of losing everything she possesses including her family (which deserts her), wealth home etc. Her child, who has grown up to become Arif Zakaria, tries his best to keep her afloat in her professional and personal life. He has his own identity problems to solve. Towards the end it is shown that Arif (Immi is the name of the character) finds an abandoned child, tries to look after it with his mother’s help but societal attitude towards a transgender force him to give the child away to Tabu and he ends his and his mother’s life as he feels that is the only solution to their problems.

There was another movie “Tamanna” which released in 1998 which was produced by Pooja Bhatt and directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The story of that movie seems to take off from where Kalpana Lajmi’s Immi gives up on his adopted baby. This is the next movie on my to-be-seen list. I don’t remember why I didn’t see these movies at the time of their release, but I am sure I would not have been able to find company or relish it back then. And I am glad that these movies are there on YouTube. Now I don’t know whose life story inspired Kalpana Lajmi to make this movie. I sat through the movie in the course of writing this post and found it fairly engrossing. (A sheer coincidence that there is Supreme Court verdict today (on 7th September, 2018) that says history owes transgenders an apology).

Kalpana Lajmi is the daughter of painter Lalita Lajmi and niece of yesteryear actor / filmmaker Guru Dutt. She began her career assisting Shyam Benegal who also happened to be her uncle. She has been making movies since 1978 starting with short films and graduating to films like ‘Ek Pal’ with Naseerudin Shah and Shabana Azmi in the lead, ‘Rudaali’ with Dimple Kapadia and Raj Babbar etc., her last directed film being ‘Chingaari’ with Sushmita Sen and Mithun Chakravarty in the lead roles.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika – born on 8th September 1926 in Assam- is the music director of this movie. He has sung a song and all the background score too, specially in the scenes that show the anguish of the central characters, his baritone voice adds to the poignancy of the scenes. Probably the first time I became aware of Bhupen Hazarika, the singer / music composer was when I heard the songs of ‘Rudaali’ and was floored by the sound of “Dil Hoom Hoom Kare” but a National award and Sahitya Academy award winner doesn’t need a certificate from a layperson like me. His Padma awards Dadasaheb Phalke awards are testimony to his greatness.

The song with this post is written by Jaaved Akhtar and sung by Asha Bhonsle. Initially I began to see the movie to see if any portion of the song is present in any other part as the video available is very short. In fact, most of the songs end abruptly in the movie except the Bhupen Hazarika song which is there in 3 parts through the movie.

And no, I have not forgotten that 8th September is also my all-time favourite singer’s birthday too. How can I forget. I adore her so much. And I am sure every one would have guessed why I chose an Asha Bhonsle song to go with this post 🙂 . And we have so much information all around about Asha Bhonsle that I am controlling myself from writing anything here.

Remembering Dr. Bhupen Hazarika (a doctorate on his thesis “Proposals for Preparing India’s Basic Education to use Audio-Visual Techniques in Adult Education”) on his birth anniversary – he would have been 92 and wishing Asha Bhonsle too on her birthday.

o jee main tarsoon is paar

nadiya kinaare ek gaon hai
gaon mein ambuva ki chhaon hai
chhaon mein rah ek yogi jaise
mann mein rahe sajana
jogi bajaaye bansuri
bansuri dard se hai bhari
dard bhari is taan se
goonje re mera angnaa
nadiya pe leheren
leheron pe naiyya
naiyya mein patwaar
phir tum kyun us paar ae saajan
aur main hoon is paar
o jee main tadpoon is paar
o jee main tarsoon is paar
aaaaa aaaaa
oooohh ooooohhh

bekali mein hai ye mann
mann mein hai lagi agan
oo oo bekali mein hai ye mann
mann mein hai lagi agan
tu aa ke bujha de sajan
nagri mein gali jaise
bagiya men kali jaise
kaliyon mein sajna jaise khushboo
sapnon mein hai tu
nadiya pe leheren
leheron pe naiyya
naiyya mein patwaar
phir tum kyun us paar ae saajan
aur main hoon is paar
o jee main tadpoon is paar
o jee main tarsoon is paar
aaaaa aaaaa
oooohh ooooohhh
ooooooooo

आsssss आsssss

आsssss आsssss
ओsss ओssss
